Barcelona Is an Attractive City
Microsoft, Facebook, Moodle, Satellogic and Lidl have one thing in common: in the last few days, these multinational companies have announced they are about to open in Barcelona new headquarters or strategic centres.

Microsoft has started to look for mathematics, physicists and engineers to open a Design Centre and Quantum Lab in addition to those already operative (3 in the US and 3 in Delf (Holland), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Sydney (Australia)).
German supermarkets giant Lidl announced that its e-commerce business will be managed from Barcelona with a 250 people team.
Argentine micro satellites Satellogic is opening a new headquarter in the Catalan capital and the Australian world reference in e-learning Moodle has chosen Barcelona to locate its first headquarter out of Australia.
Finally, Facebook seeks multilingual staff for a new centre in the city monitoring harmful content.

A spokesperson for Amazon, which will open in Barcelona a development centre for software based on machine learning, recently explained to La Vanguardia newspaper that “the extended network of universities and quality of like make Barcelona a very interesting destination for international talent […]. The city combines international talent with a dynamic and innovative network of SMEs, entrepreneurs and start-ups”.

Welcome!

UAB University: Top Spanish University According To CYD Global Ranking
CYD Foundation (CYD stands for K&D, Knowledge & Development in Spanish) aims at analysing and promoting Spanish universities’ contributions to the economic and social development of the country and strengthening links between universities and companies.

Yesterday, CYD foundation presented the results of the 5th CYD ranking, the largest Spanish universities’ ranking available at www.rankingcyd.org.

This new release takes into consideration 22 teaching areas and 2,235 grades from 73 Spanish universities (100% of the public ones and 72% of the private ones).

Based on 36 different indicators organized in 5 fields (teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international guidance, regional development contribution), anyone can use the website to elaborate tailor-made rankings corresponding to any expectation.

The global ranking that can be made shows that Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s UAB university partner ranks first as the best Spanish university (see image): congratulations!

SENER: above and below ground
Recent news from SENER, the Engineering and Construction multinational, whose Catalan headquarters are set up in Barcelona Synchrotron Park, come from both above and below ground.

SENER has been recently awarded the contract for the extension of Porto Metro Network (Portugal). SENER will perform the detailed design of the new line (Circular Line), an underground section of 2.8 km and 4 stations. It is worth noting that, according to the specialist journal ENR, SENER is number 25 among the international engineering companies in transport engineering design and number 15 in mass transit and rail. In this latter sector, it is also the number one company in Spain and the seventh in Europe.

In outer space, SENER supplies the mechanism for the Sentinel-3B Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer: Sentinel-3B satellite launched last week will join its twin, Sentinel-3A, in orbit to systematically monitor Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere as part of the Copernicus European Earth observation program, an initiative led by the European Commission in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).

Regarding space as well, SENER announced few days ago that ESA had selected SENER’s clamping mechanism in the e.Deorbit mission as part of the solution to combat the space debris problem.

Congratulations!

Barcelona Synchrotron Park Supports PRUAB
Through an agreement signed last week, Barcelona Synchrotron Park supports PRUAB in its mission to promote and ease contacts between business and research worlds.

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) Research Park (PRUAB) aims to transfer knowledge generated within UAB’s research centres to the society.

The ideas generation program can be pointed out among the many actions carried out by PRUAB: it consist in offering companies the benefit of the UAB researchers’ wealth of creativity to get proposals to their technological challenges.

PRUAB is also responsible for the new Hub b30 initiative presented two weeks ago. Hub b30 was created to promote innovation among SMEs located in the Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s territory. This platform aims to back companies and institutions to detect their challenges and needs in improving competitiveness and offer them the most appropriate solutions through collaborations and interactions.

Congratulations!

Hub b30: the emergency number of innovation!
Some weeks ago in a meeting to design Hub b30, we heard a participant say this initiative is similar to a 112 of innovation, a meaningful comparison in our opinion (112 is the European emergency number).

Since last Thursday, this 112 is a reality: this new platform was officially introduced by its creators, UAB University, UAB Research Park (PRUAB), Eurecat Technology Center and the Àmbit B30 association.

Hub b30 was created to promote innovation among SMEs located in the B30 territory, the Barcelona Synchrotron Park’s territory (B30 is the 3rd Barcelona ring road, which is adjacent to the AP7 highway). This platform aims to back companies and institutions to detect their challenges and needs in improving competitiveness and offer them the most appropriate solutions through collaborations and interactions.

One of the first actions carried out by Hub b30 consists in meetings about innovations and trends in specific sectors. These so-called Innovation Brunches will focus on specific cases of technologies or disruptive innovations in given areas. These meetings will be organized once Friday a month at 1pm: the first one will be on sensoring in healthcare (April 20) and the next one will be dedicated to smart mobility (May 11).

Hub b30, may I help you?!

ALBA synchrotron can serve automobile sector’s needs
On next April 17, a workshop will be held at ALBA synchrotron with the aim of gathering experts and researchers in advanced materials for automobile to share with them the opportunities offered by ALBA in this sector.

ALBA synchrotron is the most important synchrotron light facility in the Mediterranean area. This public infrastructure offers its services to any research group or company, no matter how small. A synchrotron is a privilege for its territory but a lot of companies ignore how useful it could be for their business.

The synchrotron light produced by the accelerated electrons enables to see the atomic and molecular structure of materials and investigate their properties. In the field of automobile, a synchrotron can be used for:
  • Coatings (paints) – Paints are made of different very thin layers that can be characterized
  • Polymers – New polymers structure can be investigated
  • Batteries – New materials can be analysed and developed (for anodes and cathodes, for instance). Charge and discharge processes can be followed in situ
  • Fuel cells
  • Advanced Materials – Composites, nanomaterials, MEMS, etc.
  • Catalysis and Catalyst – Investigation of the oxidation processes
This workshop aims at detecting opportunities of partnership in the investigation and/or development of advanced materials for the automobile sector. Top experts from this field contribute to the organization of this event: CIAC, ClusterMAV and SECPhO clusters.

Synchrotron light associated with other photonic technologies and combined with advanced materials let organizers think that this meeting can bring out many synergies and projects between companies and R&D centres attending the workshop.

This event is addressed to both researchers, R&D or innovation directors, CEO of companies from the sectors of automobile, advanced materials and photonic technologies.
